Selected work

Three examples from my work with teams at UC San Diego. Each covers the problem, my role, and what the team delivered.

Campus services · 2012

Campus websites that work across devices

The problem
Campus information needed to work on phones and tablets as well as desktop computers.
My role
I directed the Campus Web Office and wrote about our rollout in 2012.
The team’s work
Our team built responsive CMS templates and adapted shared application layouts so campus units could use the same approach.
The result
By October 2012, the approach was in use on more than 30 academic and administrative websites, following the campus homepage launch that January.
A lesson
As I noted in that account, building templates for responsive design from the start was easier than retrofitting them later.

Data & analytics · 2019–2022

A shared foundation for student analytics

The problem
Understanding enrollment, progression, and student needs required data from multiple systems.
My role
I served in project governance and as the escalation contact for the Student Activity Hub, as documented in the project archive.
The team’s work
The team created a central repository of student data for analysis in Cognos and Tableau. UC Merced and UC San Diego later collaborated on advising support.
The result
The hub launched on January 21, 2019, according to the project archive. The two-campus collaboration received the Silver UC Collaboration Award in 2022.
A lesson
The design shows how shared student data can support a specific task: identifying students who may need advising.

Institutional AI · 2023–2025

From an AI pilot to a campus service

The problem
Staff needed help with administrative work and questions about campus policies and processes.
My role
I work on TritonGPT within IT Services, alongside Operational Strategic Initiatives and campus partners. I have coauthored articles and spoken publicly about the work.
The team’s work
The teams developed specialized assistants, connected university content, and expanded access through a pilot and phased rollout.
The result
The university reports employee access in spring 2024 and student access in June 2025. Its November 2025 account also documents adoption by other institutions.
A lesson
In the university account, I emphasized the value of curated campus material in helping TritonGPT give useful responses to campus questions.
